Overview
Constance Smith Hendricks received her undergraduate degree
in Nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB)
and a master’s degree from UAB with a focus in Community
Health Nursing. She also has a graduate certificate in Gerontology
from the University of Alabama. In 1992, she earn a PhD in
clinical nursing research at Boston College where she was
the first African American to complete the nursing doctoral
degree at the institution. The focus of her research was determinants
of health promotion behaviors among Alabama’s Black
Belt adolescents. An outcome of her research was developing
a midrange health promotion empowerment theoretical framework,
the Hendricks Perceptual Health Promotion Determinants Model.
The framework continues to be utilized by students and research.
Numerous publications by Hendricks and others cite use of
the model.
Hendricks joined the AU faculty initially in 1987 until 1996.
She has held faculty positions at UAB and Tuskegee University
, prior to coming to Auburn, and with the University of South
Carolina, Columbia, SC (USC), Southern University and A &
M College and at Hampton University. While at USC, she was
awarded a 3 year NIH Minority Post Doctoral Research Fellowship
at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. At Southern
University, she Served as Chair of the Graduate Nursing Department,
where she launched the state’s first PhD in Nursing
and successfully navigated the completion of the first graduates.
She served as Dean of the School of Nursing at Hampton University
for three years, where she made a significant improvement
in the graduates’ first-time licensure passage rate
and tripled the faculty’s dissemination scholarship.
Hendricks most recently was selected as the 2007 UAB Distinguished
Alumna for the School of Nursing. She was also selected as
the 2007 Mary T. Boynton Distinguished Lecturer at the University
of Tennessee-Knoxville College of Nursing. Among her honors
and recognitions, Hendricks was the 2001 King/Chavez/Parks
Visiting Professor Scholar-In-Residence at the University
of Michigan School of Nursing. She was commissioned by Zeta
Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. to develop a National Service Initiative
(Z-HOPE™) and provide oversight and evaluation of the
implementation. Over a 5 year implementation, the program
has reached over 2 million persons with health promotion programming
across the United States and in Ghana, West Africa. The Baton
Rouge, Louisiana graduate chapter of Chi Eta Phi (Nursing)
Sorority, Inc. named its first undergraduate scholarship in
her honor, the Dr. Constance Smith Hendricks, RN Scholarship.
As a commitment to health promotion nursing research, Hendricks
established the Dr. Constance Smith Hendricks Endowed Health
Promotion Scholarship at Hampton University to be awarded
to a graduate nursing student conducting health promotion
research.
Hendricks returns to Auburn with numerous publications, instrumentation
development, a mid-range health promotion empowerment model,
successful completion of several post-doctoral fellowships
and a track record of securing external funding to promote
her program of research.
